Daniel Murray

“I'm very drawn to music that grooves, and I enjoy sounds that evoke more of a realm of feeling than a picture. Whether that be in a solo or an ensemble work makes no difference to me, as long as there's depth in the communication so that I can get a clear feeling of the composer then I will do well with the work. Although a lot of genres of music are in my comfort zone, seeing as new works for the bass are becoming more innovative by the day I definitely welcome being pushed into lesser forged paths.”

Bio

Daniel Murray is a multi-stylistic musician that enjoys laying down a canvas for other artists to paint on. The double bass is his primary instrument, but over his 10 year musical journey thus far he has also learned how to play the electric bass, cello, and piano.
Daniel was born and raised in Columbia, SC where he started playing soccer at the age of 5. Between soccer and other sports that he played along the way he feels that the presence of sports built up necessary foundations of diligence and courage, and not to mention teamwork, which he applies to his musical pursuits on the daily. Today, Daniel lives in Pittsburgh, PA where he is pursuing a Master of Music degree at Carnegie Mellon. He composes music for fun and loves to arrange music that he is into for instrumental combos, almost as much as he loves playing bass alongside recordings of his favorite singers. He believes that his mission on the bass is to sound very much like the human voice, and that its vast size alone generates a lot of possibilities for sound. In his case because of his upbringing Daniel gravitates towards Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and Ella Fitzgerald levels of soul, and feels that the journey of replicating a human voice in its small “linguistic delicacies” is a way to truly enjoy developing one’s technique. Daniel will play Mason Bynes's work, 'The [WRECK]oning on BPBC's Facebook Live on August 30th, 2020 at 7pm EST.
